Artist Statement
Colour is very important to my work. Drawing inspiration from historical forms, I add colourful elements to give my pieces a contemporary look and feel. Using the colour palette of each piece, I can change the emotion it evokes. Through the layering of coloured slip, I invite viewers to discover moments of beauty caused by my brush. There is a sense of positivity and wonder that comes when combining bright colours and wide brush strokes. Scratching down to the raw clay shows the layers and history of marks made; revealing the memories of the piece.
My pieces are either coil built or thrown in parts to achieve complex forms which will act as a canvas for my creativity. The faint marks left behind by my fingers bring a sense of intimacy to the pot. This acts as a reminder that a part of myself was put into each piece. They each hold the memory of emotions and experiences had during that moment. The end result is a piece which encapsulates my experience while also bearing its own.
